Membership Criteria

Membership in the National Humanities Alliance (NHA) is open to organizations and institutions that sponsor or support individual scholars, programs of study in the humanities, or other activities in the humanities. Applicants for membership must be exempt from federal taxation under section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code. The NHA is strictly nonpartisan. There are three categories of membership in the National Humanities Alliance:

Active Members are those organizations and associations that pay dues of an amount specified by the Board of Directors (see Dues Formula below), but not less than $1,000. Only the designated representatives of active members are eligible for nomination to the NHA Board of Directors. Active Members are eligible to attend the annual membership meeting of the NHA as voting members and to serve on the Nominating Committee.
Associate Members are those organizations and associations that pay dues of an amount specified by the Board of Directors (see Dues Formula below) - an amount which is less than $1,000, but not less than $500. Associate Members are eligible to attend the annual membership meeting of the NHA as voting members and to serve on the Nominating Committee. Associate members may not be nominated to serve on the board.
Institutional Members are the newest category of NHA members. Dues are a reflection of the nature of the educational institution and fit into two subcategories:

    • Research & Doctoral Universities ($2,500)
    • 2-Year Colleges, 4-Year Colleges, and Master's Universities ($1,000)

Designated representatives have an academic position of leadership for the humanities within the institution. They are eligible to attend the annual membership meeting of the NHA as voting members and to serve on the Nominating Committee.  Download the Institutional Membership Form (pdf file).

Dues Formula

Annual dues contributions are based on a member organization's size and interest in the humanities. The following dues formula was adopted at the 4/22/87 NHA Annual Meeting:

Recommended Contribution = (1/2 % annual operating budget) x (percentage of members concerned with or involved in the humanities)

Please note that this formula was designed primarily for organizations with individual members, and may not apply to humanities centers, organizations comprised of institutional members, or other non-individual members groups.
