Action Alert - NEH Dear Colleague Letter Circulating in the Senate

May 10, 2010 - Senator Tom Udall (D-NM) is currently circulating a 'Dear Colleague Letter' in support of increased funding for the National Endowment for the Humanities.  The letter requests total funding of $232.5 million for NEH in FY 2011, including $144 million for NEH National Programs and $60 million for the NEH Federal/State Partnership (a $65 million increase over the FY 2010 enacted level).  The deadline for Senators to sign-on to this letter is this Wednesday, May 12th.

Please write your Senators today, using NHA’s new online action center, and ask them to show their support for the humanities by adding their signature to this letter.  You can also contact your Senators by calling the Capitol Switchboard at (202) 224-3121.

The humanities represent critical modes of thought and fields of knowledge that foster a broadly-educated workforce, undergird our civic institutions, inform complex policy challenges, and enrich individual lives.  They support capacities vital to our nation in the 21st century:  knowledge of world cultures, religions, and languages; understanding of U.S. history and democratic traditions; humanistic perspectives to evaluate the implications of scientific and technological advances.  As the economic downturn puts increasing pressure on nonprofit educational institutions around the country, now is the time to increase - not diminish - federal investment in the humanities through NEH.

For more information or to sign onto the letter, Senate Offices should contact Jeanette Lyman in Senator Udall’s office by COB Wednesday, May 12th.

The sign-on letter, addressed to Appropriations Committee Chairman Inouye and Vice Chair Cochran, as well as, Appropriations Subcommittee Chairman Feinstein, and Ranking Member Alexander, is available here (pdf).
