NEH Releases 2011 Performance and Accountability Report

December 2, 2011 – On November 15, the National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH) released its 2011 Performance and Accountability Report for fiscal year 2011.  The report sets forth the agency’s goals and objectives, and provides information on the its finances and operations for the year.  Accomplishments highlighted for 2011 include the completion of NEH Chairman Jim Leach’s 50-state “Civility Tour”, and the launch of the NEH’s special initiative, Bridging Cultures

The report provides detailed performance indicators for 2011, including FY 2006-2011 grant statistics for each major NEH program (among other measures).  For example, the following data is reported for the NEH Division of Research:
  • Support was provided for 215 individual scholars to make significant progress on important humanities research projects through fellowships and stipends, compared to 227 in 2010.
  • Support was provided for 56 long-term collaborative projects in the humanities (e.g., scholarly editions, translations, archaeological excavations and analyses and other complex, large-scale undertakings), compared to 59 in 2010.  In addition, 24 previously awarded grants received ongoing support through NEH matching funds, in part through the use of We the People funding (compared to 20 in 2010).
  • Awards for 25 humanities fellowship programs at independent research institutions supported the work of 80 humanities scholars (no change from 2010).
  • Support enabled 10 individual scholars who teach at historically black colleges and universities, at institutions with high Hispanic enrollment, and at tribal colleges and universities to make significant progress on scholarly projects in the humanities through faculty research awards (compared to 5 in 2010).
