Eight new National Museum & Library Services Board Members Appointed by President Obama

November 29, 2012 – Eight new members of the National Museum and Library Services Board were sworn in at a Supreme Court ceremony on November 15.  The board serves as the advisory body for the Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS) and includes twenty presidentially appointed members of the general public who have demonstrated expertise in, or commitment to, library or museum services. 

The new board members are:

  • Charles Benton, chairman and Trustee of the Benton Foundation; 
  • Christie Pearson Brandau, adjunct professor at the School of Library and Information Management at Emporia State University; 
  • Bert Castro, president and CEO of the Arizona Zoological Society/Phoenix Zoo; 
  • Paula Gangopadhyay, chief learning officer at The Henry Ford;
  • Luis Herrera, city librarian of the San Francisco Public Library;
  • Dr. Eric J. Jolly, president of the Science Museum of Minnesota;
  • Susana Torruella Leval, director emerita of El Museo del Barrio; and
  • Suzanne E. Thorin, dean of Libraries and University Librarian at Syracuse University.

The newly confirmed board members replace Katherine Berger, Karen Brosius, Douglas Myers, Jeffrey Patchen, Lotsee Patterson, Sandra Picket, Harry Robinson, and Katina Strauch, whose terms expired.
