Historians Partner with US State Department, United Nations, to Organize Human Rights Summit

Human Rights Leaders meet in Geneva December 8-10

December 11, 2009 - Women human rights leaders met in Geneva December 8-10 for the first Courage to Lead summit. The meeting brings together emerging women leaders and those with experience in human rights advocacy around the world. The US Mission to the UN says the meeting is designed to encourage exchanges, mentoring and collaboration among the women.  The summit is organized by George Washington University’s Eleanor Roosevelt Project and the Vital Voices Global Partnership, and sponsored by the US State Department, the International Labour Organization, and the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights.

Dr. Allida Black, Director of the Eleanor Roosevelt Project, planned the conference to commemorate the 125th birthday of Eleanor Roosevelt.  Prior to the events, Dr. Black said through a press release, "This summit will equip emerging women leaders with the knowledge, skills, connections and international support they need to bring about change in their home countries."  "Eleanor Roosevelt believed in the power of women to bring about change, and she spent her life working to improve conditions for all human beings. This conference is our way of commemorating and extending her work."
