December 18, 2009 - On December 17, 2009, the Modern Language Association (MLA) released data projecting a 37% decline in faculty positions advertised in their Job Information List (JIL) in 2009-2010. The projected decline comes after a 26% decrease last year. This marks the two sharpest one-year declines in the history of the JIL, dating back to 1975-76. The Job Information List is considered to be an accurate indicator of trends in full-time faculty positions in language and literature, especally in the tenure track assistant professor positions sought by recent PhDs beginning academin careers.
