Museums Community Issues Action Alert

Language contained in the recently-passed House version of the “Jobs for Main Street Act” (H.R. 2847, Sec. 1702) prevents zoos and aquariums from accessing any funds for job creation.

The House-passed legislation currently states:

"Sec.1702. All funds provided under this title shall be subject to the requirements of section 1604 of division A of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 (Public Law 111-5).”

Section 1604 of the enacted ARRA language included the following language:

"None of the funds appropriated or otherwise made available in this Act may be used by any State or local government, or any private entity, for any casino or other gambling establishment, aquarium, zoo, golf course, or swimming pool."

The American Association of Museums (AAM) is working with the Association of Zoos and Aquariums to try to stop this provision from being included in any new job-creation bill.

Additional information is available on the AAM website, where they have also established an online webform to send messages to elected officials.
