April 30, 2010 – On Thursday, April 22, the National Council of Teachers of English (NCTE) held its seventh Advocacy Day in Washington, DC. Fifty-eight participants prepared for their Hill visits by reviewing the Department of Education’s Blueprint for Reform on ESEA reauthorization and NCTE’s legislative asks. Legislators were asked by advocates to cosponsor and vote for the LEARN Act (H.R. 4027; S. 2740) and support teachers as professionals in defining teacher effectiveness. Guest speakers at the program included:
- Massie Ritsch, Deputy Assistant Secretary for External Affairs and Outreach, U.S. Department of Education;
- Brad Jupp, Senior Education Program Specialist, U.S. Department of Education;
- Patty Murray, U.S. Senator and Sponsor of the LEARN Act (S. 2740); and
- New York City teacher, Jennifer Ochoa.
